Organisers have today released details of the thirty bands selected to take part in the Futuresound 2009 competition this summer.

Now entering its 9th year, the annual event is hugely popular and several hundred local bands and musicians entered once again.

The selected bands are battling it out to appear at the dual-site Reading and Leeds Festivals 2009 with six places available at both the Leeds and Reading festivals.

For the second year running, the overall winner of the competition will appear on the Festival Republic stage; the five runners will play on the BBC Introducing Stage.

Each year has been a huge success with the calibre of bands playing always very high. In 2008, Dinosaur Pile Up were selected in the top six - this year, the Leeds band will appear on the Radio One / NME Stage. Last year's overall winner was Fran Rodgers.

The competition takes place over 10 dates at the Cockpit in Leeds during June and July with each gig judged by three independent members of the music industry.

The top six will be announced in July.
