This is an archive of the band profile for Lewis J. Smith.

Lewis J. Smith is a 21 year old singer-songwriter from Leeds in the UK. Citing influences such as Iron & Wine, The National, Leonard Cohen and Gillian Welch, his music combines a lyrical and melodic subtlety with a deep-rooted story telling tradition, bringing together an eclectic array of inspirations and instruments to create a sound that has been described as "hauntingly beautiful rootsy old folk".

His first EP, Moonlight & Magnolias, was released in Autumn 2013 after a successful crowdfunding campaign raised almost double the initial target, and appears to justify such a description. The five track collection carries the listener through a whole spectrum of places and moods, from the majestic "Man Who Planted Trees", inspired by the Jean Giono novella, to the eerily sombre title track, which was described by one critic as "a soundtrack to Absalom Absalom... it has a definite Faulknerian undercurrent" .

Part of Cabbages & Kings Arts management roster, he has been featured as the Huffington Post's Student Musician of the Week, as well as receiving airplay on BBC Radio. And after a brief spell on the continent, he looks set for a busy end to 2013 with live shows throughout the country..
